For the past three years, Serena has had the opportunity to develop a lasting, true friendship with her Buddy. She mentions that her favorite part of every visit is the opportunity to learn more about her buddy’s life and outlook on the world. Although some days present initial conversations as difficult, Serena and her Buddy are nevertheless able to enjoy one another’s presence. Spending time with her Buddy is something that Serena looks forward to each week, and getting to know her Buddy has been a great joy for her.

One of the stand-out memories that Serena has with her Buddy involves a group game of cornhole. Within a circle, the board and bean bag were brought up to each individual. She mentions that her Buddy was ever so encouraging and would inspire all of the other players. When it was finally her Buddy’s turn, he made four perfect hole-in-ones! To Serena, what stood out the most was not her Buddy’s fantastic cornhole skills, but rather the positive energy that he brought to everyone else within the room; remarking that he is the kind of person to always brighten the mood of everyone around him, and her conversations with him are always very humorous and joyful because of his radiance. Besides being an amazing cornhole player, Serena’s Buddy also used to work with the Peace Corps, and taught children in various countries!

“As a student my mind is often fixated on the future, whether it's preparing for an exam, applying for medical school, or planning events for a club. However, I have found that in my conversations with my buddy, the future rarely comes up, and our discussions usually center around the present or distant past.  They will often speak of the moments or people in their lives that left the deepest impression on them. Taking the time to sit with someone and reflect on our lives and thoughts is something very intimate and beautiful, and it has helped me realize the value of being present in the moment. Something as simple as showing up and having a conversation is so valuable, and has the ability to brighten both of our days.”

- Serena Day

Serena currently attends Wellesley College and is majoring in Data Science. Reflecting on why she joined Alzheimer Buddies, Serena mentions that the organization stuck out to her as a way she could directly work with a population that is often socially isolated. She knew of the large benefit that social engagement could have on individuals affected with Alzheimer’s, and believed that volunteering would allow her to make a difference in others’ lives. In her spare time, Serena enjoys drawing, painting, playing the violin, and doing martial arts. She hopes to attend medical school and become a physician in the future.
